Jeep's Wagoneer Roof Rack Recall Covers 100,000 SUVs, And FCA Is Being Refreshingly Honest About The Risk

A loose roof crossbar isn't just an inconvenience for the owner — it's a projectile for whoever's driving behind them. FCA's blunt acknowledgment of that risk is worth noting.

The Real Risk Here Isn’t To The Wagoneer Owner — It’s To Everyone Driving Behind Them

Most recalls center on protecting the vehicle’s own occupants. This one is a useful reminder that some defects create risk for people who have nothing to do with the affected vehicle at all. If a Wagoneer’s roof crossbar detaches at highway speed, FCA itself acknowledges the freed component becomes a genuine road hazard capable of causing another vehicle to crash without warning — a risk to the driver behind, not the driver inside.

The Scope Is Genuinely Large

FCA is recalling 97,349 examples spanning the 2022-2025 Jeep Wagoneer, 2022-2026 Grand Wagoneer, 2023-2025 Wagoneer L, and 2023-2026 Grand Wagoneer L. That’s a wide model-year and variant spread for a premium SUV lineup, and it’s compounded by a separate recall covering 3,038 Mopar accessory roof rack kits across six part numbers — meaning both factory-installed and aftermarket-purchased racks carry the same underlying vulnerability.

“100 Percent Defect Estimate” Is An Unusually Blunt Admission

FCA is citing a 100% defect rate across the entire recalled population — for both the vehicle recall and the separate accessory kit recall. That doesn’t necessarily mean every single unit will fail, but it does mean FCA isn’t trying to narrow the affected population down to a subset it thinks is actually at risk. Citing the full population as potentially defective, rather than quietly hoping most units are fine, is a more conservative and transparent posture than plenty of manufacturers take in similar situations.

The Actual Track Record So Far Is Reassuring, With A Caveat

As of August 31, Stellantis had received just 15 warranty claims potentially related to this issue worldwide, with none involving accidents or injuries. That’s genuinely good news on the “has anyone actually been hurt” question. But 15 known claims against a 100,000-vehicle population, discovered before a full recall was even issued, is also a reminder that field data at this stage is inherently incomplete — the true failure rate as more vehicles rack up mileage remains an open question.

The Warning Signs Are Specific And Worth Remembering

FCA says owners might notice a rattling noise, a visibly missing bolt, or a crossbar beginning to separate at its pivot joint before a full detachment occurs. If you own an affected Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer and have any roof rack accessories mounted (a bike rack, a rooftop cargo box), that’s exactly the kind of setup where you’d want to inspect the crossbar pivot points directly rather than waiting for the October 8 notification to arrive by mail.

The Fix Is Straightforward, Once It Reaches You

Dealers will replace the pivot joints with newly designed pivot bolts, free of charge. The practical gap is the timeline — notifications don’t start until October 8, meaning affected owners are driving with this known defect for some additional weeks before formal outreach even begins.

My Take

This is a case where I’d actively recommend Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer owners in the affected model years not wait for the mailed notice, especially if they’re running any roof-mounted accessories. A visual check of the crossbar pivot bolts takes a few minutes and costs nothing, and given that the failure risk extends to other drivers on the road, not just the vehicle’s own occupants, this is exactly the kind of recall where proactive owners can meaningfully reduce real-world risk before the formal process catches up.

If you own an affected Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer, have you noticed any rattling from the roof rack area? Worth sharing so other owners know what to listen for while waiting on the October notification.
